Sigh. Oh... but I did forget to pack my sports bra?!!? Seriously...I remembered my Garmin, charger, heart rate monitor, everything else, so as to not let that sidetrack me I made a quick shopping stop to solve that (and I used a gift card)!

I like to analyze. Did I get sick because I wasn't getting enough sleep (maybe, but before my trip I was well rested). I had terrible sleeps in the hotel because of a non-stop heater fan that I couldn't get to shut off! Earned me a Starbucks card when I politely complained at check out! Did I get sick because I was training too hard and not eating enough? Well clearly the scale disagrees! Insert BIG POUT here (I'm certain it was "accidental" over consumption covered later in this post which caused the scale to not budge). Or could it be the germy magnets I call my sweet children that made me sick? Hard to say, but what I do know is that I have now missed a swim, bike and a run :(

Things I've been obsessing on lately.
Tracking calories in and calories burned. Although I like to not have to cook for myself, I don't like the lack of control!! Meals I ate out in the last week:

Thursday & Friday lunch.

Saturday dinner.

All day Mon/Tues/Wed and most of Thursday.

That's a lot!! And mistakes were made, for example dinner on Wednesday. I thought the portions were fairly small but when I went online later to find out.... 970 calories!!! Are you kidding me?? I was still hungry afterward :( But it is done, so no going back on it.

More obsession... I did my treadmill workout at the hotel, I did my warm up, and then seven 1:30 sprints at 7 mph, then I did an easier run after (totalling 50 minutes). Then I think, maybe that treadmill was easier than mine at home, because although it was hard, it wasn't "BRUTAL".

Using myfooddiary.com I can log my exercise and all of my food. When I make my own food, I measure and weight it, so I'm pretty sure about how many calories I'm putting in. But do I really know how many calories I burned during my swim? Or during my bike ride? So the best I can do is "guess". But that determines how many calories it suggests I eat for the day. There are definitely days where I finish under my daily amount, so then I worry I'm not eating enough and won't lose. So complicated!!!

Went to "The Bike Shop" with my sister on Monday to help her get some gear :) It was fun! We were thinking of going up to Calgary this weekend, but with me being sick...it's a stay home weekend for sure.

I also got to meet up with my good friends in Spruce Grove, we got to go for dinner (the calorically expensive one!) and had a good time chatting. Was very nice indeed, and I was super happy because I think they'll be coming down for visit in a few weeks ;)

This week's goals...
Focus during my workouts. Intensity Intensity Intensity
Good eating, but not deprivation.

Recovery Recovery Recovery

Surprisingly this week went pretty good considering it started off just recovering from a cold and the chilly cold weather! It was also scheduled as a recovery week for training. I still tried to keep my workouts a bit longer than my training plan called for, including adding a circuit to Wednesday's 30 min run! I did walking lunges, squats, kettle ball raises, push ups, tri dips and some skipping (times 3). Wow, was I sore afterward :( For swims I added extra 500 sets going easy at the end, and a bit of extra "easier" spins on the bike. Lately I've been feeling lower energy and really wanted to eat more, which meant more calories to burn (I think it's making me cranky at times).

I was down 2 lbs, not bad since I missed two workouts the week before from being sick and my workouts this week were a bit "lighter". Last night we played some Xbox Kinnect Fruit Ninja... so fun, and my biceps are sore from going crazy on the pomegranates :) Still have not beat Erin's score of 66!
This week's total, 6 workout days (2 swim, 2 bike, 2 run, one circuit, one rousing game of fruit ninja hehehehe).

This week I tried a new recipe for a sweet pea pesto (picture above). It was super tasty, but did upset my tummy a bit, so I'm thinking I must have over done it on the fresh garlic. I used it in a baked salmon sandwich with sweet pea shoots, and roasted coloured carrots.

This coming week I have two work lunches at the pub....eeek going to have to plan it well. Maybe I'll order salad and then have bigger snacks before and after.

This week's goals....

I'd like to go for 3 lbs, just to be at nice even number before my road trip :)

Therefore, I need to be aware of my intensity while I am working out, especially in the pool.

Keep drinking my water everyday (which reminds me I haven't drank any today?!?!?!)

Keep going good on planning my food/meals (maybe I should go and get groceries today, afterall!).

Getting my sleep, and keeping stress levels down (sigh!)

Ended with a "Bang"

This week ended with a "bang". Not the good kind of bang either. On Thursday I felt a cold coming :( and by about 3 a.m. on Friday morning I knew I wasn't doing my trainer ride. And as it turns out Saturday's run was a no go either!!! So my competitive soul was dampened and I was tempted to squeeze them both in today, but just doing household odds and ends was exhausting me. I'm headed into a recovery week in my training, so I am super duper bummed that I didn't get in those two workouts. But what can you do! My biggest concern was that I'd get comfortable with 3 days off in a row and struggle to get back into the "zone".

This photo shows a pretty balmy day from this week, it was only -26, but most mornings it was -30 with windchills in the mid -40's Yowsa!

But my reward for working so hard with my training and my eating (especially the eating) was that I was down another 4 lbs!!!! The amount of time it took me to type that was about how long it took for me to realize that it is likely that after two great big drops like that, that this week will likely be meager loss. With it being a recovery week too.... gotta say, I love the long hard workouts as it allows me to eat more!! But I am making good choices and not squandering those calories on empty bad things ;)

This week I'll attribute my success to focusing on logging my food on myfooddiary.com. I find I don't eat a bunch of things and then go, uh oh, no more calories left. Usually I know the night before what my next day will be like for my main meals and snacks, and then I know whether I've got room for a skinny latte or a fruit smoothie or not :) Fruit smoothies are my favourite early evening snack. Eamon loves them too, so I usually do up a enough for both of us.
They're simple, a banana, a yogurt, splash of milk and then whole frozen strawberries.

This weekend was fairly quiet, Brynn had a bday party (sledding!!!) on Saturday and Larry and Eamon went into the city today for a movie and to pick up a few groceries while Miss Brynn and I napped :)

Oh, and I might get a chance to help plan the local tri this summer :) How awesome would that be? Does that mean I can't race??

I'm very close to being finished my plan for fundraising for the Ride to Conquer Cancer 2012....just need to find a couple hours of time to put it into action. Not sure it'll happen this week as I'm going to be super busy with work!! And in a few weeks time I'm headed on the road for work, so I'll need to get my training/eating plan ready well in advance for that week! But I'm super excited as I get to visit with some awesome friends in Spruce Grove and I'll also get to stop in Red Deer for a few days ;)

This week's goals

stick with the controlled eating

not overdo it during training for my recovery week (who me??? never!!!) maybe I could use the extra time to do a bit of strength training/stretching

remember to eat my snacks at work and drink my water (love my new water bottle)

It's working ....

I was thrilled when I weighed myself yesterday and was down 6 lbs :) That's a rough estimate as it could actually be more. I stopped weighing myself for awhile ;(
I've been following my tri training plan to a "T" and have been logging my food and doing the planning part for two weeks, so there you go.

So for the last 2 weeks:
3 hrs 41 minutes running
3 hours 30 min cycling
2 hours 25 min swimming
For some reason that doesn't seem like a lot now :( But by Saturday I'm pretty tired so the long run usually does me in! Plus we went skating yesterday. But Sunday is my rest day from training :) So today I'm getting caught up on house stuff. I also made my second batch of "Cream" of Broccoli soup today!

A few triumphs from the week:

Didn't completely hate my swims this week!

On Thursday we had Erin and Amber, Brooklyn over for dinner, Larry made lasagna and I made some Eggplant Parmesan as a healthy option for myself :)

Sweet Brooklyn and Uncle Larry :)

I am amazed how logging my food really helps me keep within the correct range for calories, and from mindless snacking.

Tonight we are going to Erin and Kengo's for dinner, so I'm going to have to be EXTREMELY good for the earlier part of the day. So far so good :)

But I still have to make cake pops.... that's going to be tough! I will try chewing gum to keep me from nibbling. (** Update: It worked, I didn't nibble even a bit!)

I haven't really got my act together for my fundraising plan for the Ride to Conquer Cancer yet. I have to make up some posters and a plan for the cake pops. That's why I'm making some today.
Here they are in process.

I'm going to include some recipes that I've been using....I'll add photos as I make them next.

Spaghetti Squash First I stab the squash a few times all the way through.
Microwave for 5-6 minutes
Then slice in half lengthwise and microwave further (open side down on a plate) for about 4 more minutes
Scoop out seeds from middle, then using a fork scrape out "noodles".

My favourite way of using the Spaghetti Squash is to saute the following in a pan:
1t of olive oil, onion, garlic, chopped zuchini, peppers, mushrooms, spinach, tomato

Then I mix it into some Spaghetti Squash, add some salt and pepper and 1 oz of crumbled goat cheese :) So Yummy! I also found that a bit of turkey bacon crumbled in puts it OVER the top YUMMY!

Eggplant Parmesan
Slice medium egglpant into slices about 1 cm thick (I slice them into rounds)
Spray a bit of PAM into a casserole dish.
I then lay slices of eggplant on bottom of pan, then top with some sliced fresh mushrooms and spread 1/2 cup of cottage cheese. Then I do it again, layer eggplant, sliced fresh mushrooms another 1/2 cup of cottage cheese. Top with about 1.5 cups of spaghetti sauce (I use Health Choice). Sprinkle top with 4 oz of shredded light mozzarella cheese. Cover with tin foil and bake for 60 minutes at about 375. Remove foil and bake for another 5-10 minutes. Makes 6 servings, although I always eat 2 servings in one go :)

"Cream" of Broccoli Soup
1T Olive Oil
2 carrots
2 celery stalks
1 sm onion
1 900 ml container of low salt chicken stock
1 cup cooked rice
4.5 cups chopped broccoli
1 cup milk

(1.5 cups is 164 cal and is very filling)

Saute carrots, celery, onion in the olive oil for about 5 minutes (I chopped it all up nice and fine in the food processor)
Add rice, chicken stock, broccoli, bring to boil and simmer for 10-15 minutes.

Blend in food processor or blender and return to pot. Add 1 cup milk.
My blender is really big so I just put it all in with the milk and blend it up. I liked it thick, but if you prefer you can add more milk, you can also sprinkle with parmesan or white cheddar cheese :)

Phew! I made it.

My first week of training done AND with the holidays over, I returned to work for two whole LONG days days. It's always tough going back after a break, but I survived.

As for the training....well, I survived 2 swims (Monday's swim was the first in over a year!), 2 bikes and 1 run (2nd run is tomorrow).
Basically I am using my training plans from 2010. It is a bit tough because the old plan started at the beginning of December (2009) and I'm starting one month in. As such, I was right back in.... single leg drills, oh how I'd forgotten how evil you are. But truly, today I felt really great! My legs are fatigued, but I feel really good. Physically and mentally!

In addition to my training, I have had three really great "clean" eating days! Yay!
It's been tough, but I have found myself back on myfooddiary logging my food so I know I'm on track and planning too. If I have a plan for the day, and I have it ready to go for the morning, then it is easy for the time when I'm at work. As for at home, it does take extra effort (will power baby....lots of Christmas treats still around!) with lots of salads, and I'm back to drinking my mint tea. Still need to get better about my water drinking.

I still haven't weighed myself, avoiding it until the end of next week (so I can see some improvement). Although it'd be good to have a starting point...I know how I feel and how my clothes fit is the important thing. Plus I have a $100 gift card I'm saving for a special "treat"...

Finally, my sister committed to doing the 2012 Ride to Conquer Cancer with me :) YAY!!!
So the excitment and training begin!!

Best be off to bed, gotta get up for a run tomorrow (my least favourite kind of run...long and slooooowwww, oh yeah heart rate monitor I remember you... and I still don't like you!).

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jasminn-trihigh.blogspot.com/2012/01/phew-i-made-it.html' title='Phew! I am sad that I didn't blog in 2011 so I will try to do better this year as I think it holds me accountable :)

[For my own personal records, I'm going to do a summary of 2011 at the end. If you aren't me, you can probably skip it :)]

Here I am, January 1st 2012 and as I'm not one for really making resolutions let's suffice it to say that I've signed up for a race this May. I'd planned to start off with a nice Sprint Tri, one of my favourite races the "Splash, Pedal, Gasp" (it had been cancelled for 2011 due to pool renovations). Sadly it sold out (in just over 2 weeks!!!!!). So my choices were, give up (ha!), Super Sprint (ha ha!) or Olympic distance (ha ha ha! Crazy right?!?!?). Guess which I went with?!?!? Yup, Olympic Distance!!!!!! Not sure it was the sane choice, but nevertheless, it has been decided.

Now begins the planning. I suspect it'll be difficult getting back into the training without a coach as I really enjoyed having the structure, but I will look over my coaching logs from 2010 and use the resources available online. I'm also "toying" with the idea of signing up for the 2012 Ride to Conquer Cancer. I see a lot of cake pop selling in my future in order to raise the $2500!

This is what my 2012 looks like so far:
May 2012, Oly Distance Tri :: Lethbridge
June 2012, RTCC :: Alberta/Calary
July 2012, "Swam the Dam" :: Oly Distance :: Magrath

To borrow a quote from Kelownagurl
"Make 2012 the best year ever - it's all up to you!!!"

Tomorrow is training day #1. Here goes.....

A year in review::
Things that happened in 2011.

Early in the New Year, I hired a personal trainer, Deb! She was awesome. I had been doing a lot of extra contract work, so thought I'd treat myself with some of the proceeds. It was well worth it and I felt great.

In April we went on an amazing road trip down to Disneyland and San Diego, with a stop in Las Vegas on the way home :) So much fun... and I actually lost a few pounds (how'd that happen?? I made up for it later though!).

In July we headed out to the West Coast, to visit family as I had some meetings for work. We had a great time :)

The Fall was extremely stressful with my work at the University.

For my mental health I had to give up all my freelance contract work. Phew! (but I miss the extra $$).

I started to do a lot of baking, which was fun but probably not the healthiest of hobbies, but it did help me to master making "cake pops", which I hope to use toward earning $ for the Ride to Conquer Cancer this summer (2012).

Sadly, we lost our dear Heather in September, oh such heartbreak for our family. She was my inspiration for the Ride to Conquer Cancer in 2010, and will be my strength for the ride in 2012.

My dear Stacey returned from her Maternity Leave in November...she's an awesome gal and was my training partner in crime :)

Those are the main events of 2011. Lots of travel and lots of stress. I note that there is a complete lack of any RACES for 2011 :( In retrospect a major mistake, but 2012 look out because I'm BACK!!

Last race of the season in the bag

Last Saturday marked my last tri race of 2010. Looking back it was a good year.... 4 triathlons with the Alberta Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer squished in the middle.

The race was probably the smallest race I've been in, but it was our small town's inaugural triathlon. It was well planned and a great time! They also had a kids tri which was super cute! Love seeing the kids getting excited about triathlon. And I think... wow, one of these kids could be the next olympian in triathlon :)

My race was okay, swim was dreadful, but honestly with all the travel of late, it was to be expected as I didn't make it to the pool near enough leading up to the race.
The ride was nice, although I'd done a big bike ride with my sister up to Fairmont resort (big big big hills) the Tuesday before and I could feel the fatigue in my quads.
times: Swim: 14:58 ?!?!?!?!? Bike (including T1/T2) 51:23 (this is where I'd hoped for more like 45 mins), Run: 25:35.
Overall 1:31 (seriously so close to a sub 1;30)

Generally, I was fine with my race, I tried not to over analyze, but if I am completely honest, I'd have to say I'm disappointed that I didn't see more improvement generally.

I was tempted to do another race, just a small race 15 minutes away from my place, but then where do I stop?!!? I could do another race the next weekend too :)

So when I look back I can say I'm definitey a stronger cyclist (thanks to the Ride to Conquer Cancer). My running has slowly improved, and definitely my ability to go further is vastly better. Prior to 2010, I'd never run a 10k, and now I've completed 3 (2 road races & 1 oly tri).
Swimming, what can I say. I have to learn to push myself, and move out of the survival mode!

What's next? A half marathon in October and I'm hoping to drop about 15 lbs before Christmas. I'm hoping that a lower weight will improve my speed. But, I'm left wondering... "am I even built for speed?" Maybe I should work toward the longer distances?!?!? I loved the Olympic Tri, I mean it hurt, but I really enjoyed it. I volunteered for the Calgary 70.3 and it was really great, and I can see myself doing one in the next few years. But that's one to take up with my family first :)

So I'm back to circuit training, which is nice change...working it hard to burn some fat fat fat. Of course, I may have over done it and am walking a bit slower this week :)

Monday's circuit looked like this...

10 min warm up on treadmill
then the circuit following 3 times
100 skip
15 pushups
20 squats
15 tricep dips
20 walking lunges with with dumbell shoulder press
10/side med ball twists
10 med ball throw downs
10 mountain climbers
10 jump squats
20 fit ball crunches

10 minute cool down on treadmill

I still have some planning to do in order to work in the 1/2 marathon kms, and probably a swim or 2 a week (when I return to work). Sigh I'm tired just thinking about it!! And as I wrap up the end of my 3 week vacation from work...I'm feeling a bit sad :( It was an epic vaca though, Vancouver, Canmore, Fairmont.... so much fun!!!

(picture of the Eamon, Brynn & their cousin Zach at Panorama)

First Olympic Tri Race Report

Leading up to Saturday's race I was extremely nervous! It was going to be my first Olympic Triathlon. I wasn't worried about the individual sports, I knew independently I could do each of them, but together??!?!?! So I tried to remind myself that I had put in the training time so I would be fine (although I missed some workouts leading up to the race with all my travel).

But the trip to Vancouver was AWESOME!!!!! Above photos from our trip :)

Even still, on the morning I was super nervous, more than the usual pre race jitters!!!

I kept telling myself to not panic on the swim, and I was oddly calm when I entered the water… no panic attack!! My swim time wasn’t great (41:09), BUT it was about what I expected and I was really hoping I wasn’t the last one out, and I wasn’t. In future I think I need to re-evaluate my race swim strategy, because my mindset is not, swim fast or even swim hard, it’s usually just “get ‘er done” and don’t panic. I had to pee from the moment I got in the water...but I couldn't pee in my wetsuit... I know others do it, but seriously I tried (ewwww sorry) but I couldn't. One great thing was that there was a timing mat as we entered the water, so although it was a mass start, you could seed yourself without losing time.

My T1 was a bit slower than I’d liked, since my last race had wet suit strippers I hadn’t really practiced getting out of my wetsuit, so it was pretty awkward and I was still in “survival mode” and kind of cotton headed. I still had to pee, and there was a porta potty at T1, but I was wearing my 1 piece tri suit, with a cycling jersey on top... I determined it would take too long to go, a decision I'd have to live with for the rest of the race!

I don’t have any Garmin data because I forgot to upload my previous sets of data, so it was full and kept giving me an error message :( GRRR one day I’ll actually get it to do what I want it to during a race! Plus, my Garmin bike computer still isn't working after it fell apart during the Ride to Conquer Cancer (just needs a tiny screw).

Overall I was pretty happy with my bike time (1:27 it includes both T1 & T2), and at about 14 kms in I had some good competition with another racer, who passed me twice (on hills… figures!) but then I easily passed her on the flat outs, so I hammered down, and was determined to get way ahead so she couldn’t pass me again. I think that really helped me having a push since I am so competitive and I ended up a good few minutes ahead by the end of the bike and even passed a few others along the way.

T2, was average I guess, again I was tempted to visit the porta potty (ummmm nope TOO much time would be wasted, but just in case I asked a volunteer if there were more potties on the run route... they didn't know??!?!!), and the run was interesting. Usually in my brick workouts I have had a bit of calf “stress” but it goes away pretty quick, usually after 2 or 3 minutes. This time I’m pretty sure it lasted well into the 3rd or 4th km. But once I was going, I kept at it, and didn’t walk at all :) It was only until between km 8 & 9 that my lower back started to feel somewhat fatigued, but I didn’t really have the hip/back pain like I usually get (run time 1:10). I did a 10k race a few weekends ago, and finished in 1:01:30 (grrrr so close to breaking 60 minutes).

Of course I was happy to cross the finish line. 3:19…. s’okay, I was hoping for around 3:15, but I was happy to finish, and felt like except for the swim, I did what I could, and hey…there’s always next year :) I didn't beat myself up at all. I had a strange peacefulness, a calm knowing I had done it. Proved to myself I could do it. Like I'd acomplished something just for me :) I was tired, but it was a happy tired! Oh yeah and I had to PEE!!!!

I am going to do at least one more Sprint (Raymond is having one on August 7th and I couldn’t resist!), and already I have a different thought process…because it seems so “short” in comparison. And in theory I could do a Sprint on the 14th and 21st.... I'll resist!

I have even planned myself some structured workouts on my own (think I'll miss the coaching), I felt "lost" without the structure. Plus at the pool, without a planned workout I run the risk of quitting too early.

I'm going to work toward the ½ marathon in October. No doubt I’ll be back at "triathloning" next year, and I think I’ll keep my goal to do a 1/2 IM sometime before I’m 40!

I'm thinking that I'll be excited to get back at some circuit & core training, and I'm going to work hard to knock off those last pesky 10 lbs, hoping that'll make a difference for my runbike times.

My Ride to Conquer Cancer

June 26 & 27, 2010 will be two days of my life that I will not soon forget.
(Warning... it's a bit of a long post)

The morning started off fairly typical for me, early up, and prepping for something new. I headed out to Spruce Meadows, only to be faced with a huge amount of traffic, but guess that's to be expected when 1888 riders are getting ready to head out on a two day, 220km ride. Erin met me at the opening ceremonies and it was great to have her there! There was a lot of excitement in the air and the opening ceremonies were incredibly emotional. I doubt there was a dry eye in the crowd, but there was a lot of cheering too, especially when they announced that collectively we'd raised $7.4 million dollars!!!

With that, we were off! It was odd to me, that even though I was surrounded by 1888 other riders with a common purpose, heading out all together, united as one.... I can't recall the last time in my life I had felt so deeply alone. It must have been that sudden realization that only I could get me and my road bike across those 220kms. It didn't last long, because as soon as we headed out I was focusing on a great big hill to climb.

(photo above, pitstop at Okotoks)

Before I knew it I was at Okotoks, and then High River, and then Nanton. Like an automaton, I waited in line for a shower and went to bed in "tent village" with my ear plugs firmly in place, and slept like a LOG.

I'll admit, I didn't have the same gusto behind me when I started out day two, and I seriously expected the day to be horrible. About 15kms into the day I regained my cellular service and heard the chime of text messages coming in (thanks everyone!!!!) that I knew I was going to be fine.

Day two was brilliant!!! I savoured the day and tried to enjoy every second knowing that it was going to go fairly quick. And as I came closer to the end I was overcome by periodic waves of emotion, and I had to choke back the tears. Crossing the finish line was a great moment, not just because I was done, but because it was a great feeling knowing that I was part of something so special, and for such a special purpose. Every person there, had someone they were carrying with them in their minds and hearts, for each and every kilometer. Heather, I can say this without a moments hesitation.... for you, I would do it again and again. It was a weekend I'll remember for FOREVER and I can only hope that it will make a difference.

Generally speaking...I had no mechanical issues which was surprising given the number of flats I had during training. I had a few hurts, mostly my feet because they kept falling asleep :( I've been asked about my backside... but honestly, that great seat I invested in was worth every penny. For the first time in my life, I have a bit of a tan (albeit a crazy form of a farmers tan) and that was with SPF 60 on!!! I had a few moments of "grrrrr" when people decided to pass on the right or ride 4 across up a hill.... I had to quelch my competitive spirit a number of times and remind myself it was a ride not a race :)

I can't begin to thank my donors for their support and of course my family... for being my cheerleaders, for putting up with my crazy training antics and for their general belief in me.

My big weekend approaches

It's true, I'm nervous, but at the same time I'm so excited to be taking on this journey. Saturday June 26 & Sunday June 27.

At the beginning, I was able to focus my energies on doing the fundraising and although I was still training for my triathlons, I wasn't doing anything too special in preparation for the physical part of the ride. However, more recently I've been including some longer rides (Raymond to Lethbridge and back last Sunday!), and since my next triathlon is a longer distance, Shawn's been upping my workouts anyway, with lots of two a day workouts. So yesterday I did a 1:20 ride followed by a 20 min run ;) Today was a ride in the a.m. with a 2000m swim at lunch (had to cut it short to 1800m).

With lots of distractions (see above) I've not really had a chance to get too worked up. I don't have any goals for a finish time, but I know that when it gets hard, and it will, that I will keep all of my donors in mind, and of course Heather (love you!!). As hard as the ride might feel at the time, I know it is only infinitesimal compared to the journey she's on. And I think the collective spirit of all the riders will be an experience of a lifetime, and no doubt very emotional.

I will leave for Calgary tomorrow morning, as I have a few work meetings scheduled for the afternoon. Then to my sister's for the night. Then on Saturday I'll begin my "epic" ride out of Calgary, returning on Sunday. On Sunday, I'll have a tired body, but I expect I'll have a refreshed optimism and hope for humanity and a new respect for cyclists around the world :)

I hope to be able to document this experience via twitter [ @jasminnbert ] and to take some photos along the way.

Wasa Tri 2010

The lead up to this race seems to have been long ;)

Last year's race was so awesome, so I was really hoping that my experience this year would be at least as enjoyable. Of course the weekend started off excellent with Brynn's first ever triathlon, which she really enjoyed :)

After Brynn's race and some hanging out, I decided to take a quick ride over the bike course. It's a 7 km loop that is done 3 times during the race. It is an amazing course, nice and scenic and no major hills. The weather was great, and I thought I'd just take a nice easy ride. It was hard to go easy, I wanted to see how fast I could do it, but I resisted the temptation, which was made even harder because there were other people out just tearing it up :)

After the ride, it was time to head into Cranbrook, where I'd planned to meet up with Stacey and Lilli. Well... the drive in was infuriating to say the least, with road construction making me about 30 minutes late! Oh well... what are you going to do... of course I'd also forgotten my iPod so was stuck listening to CBC1 talk-radio! OY!

Race package pickup/meeting was typical, packed packed packed. Stuck around for the beginning of the meeting, until the swim course was announced. The lake was pretty low, so it was doubtful it'd be on the same course as last year, as we'd have likely been able to run half of it ;) As suspected it was in a different location, but I think it is where it was in previous years. And of course this year the distance would actually be 750 for the sprint (last year's was short, quite a lot shorter.. not sure the exact numbers though).

Headed back to WASA and took Lilli down to transition, and we scoped out the swim course, and then drove the bike course. Came back, had supper (spaghetti and salad).
Eventually got the kids settled down and all my gear packed up. I was worried because I was SO tired!!!!! I did some stretching and foam rolling and went to bed. Luckily sleep came easy and I woke up at about 5:30... only 30 min before the alarm.

I was pretty calm, got up, got ready and headed to transition. Just love where we stayed, because I could walk to transition and didn't have to worry about parking at all. Got my bike racked, checked in, body marking (#720) and timing chip.

Met up with Stacey & Lilli and got transition set up. My nerves weren't too bad, but I was excited. At about 7:45 we started to get our wet suits on, and headed down to the beach for the race start (8:15). Then I got nervous as I always do at the beginning of the swim... was thinking the buoys looked pretty far out!!!

Decided to check out the water temp, it was warmer than the day before, up to 17.5 degrees C.
Lilli is a strong swimmer so she waded out into the middle, I stayed near the back. Then it was go time.

My race was pretty good! I tried not to get all crazy like I did at the last one. My overall time was longer than last year, but that was to be expected since the swim course was actually 750m this year (I’m not sure what it was last year, but looking at my times I’m guessing less than 500m). So I decided for comparison to last year that I would not focus on my overall time or on my swim time.

My swim time, which included 180 m run up the beach, wet suit stripping (very cool feature) and re-doing my timing chip which flew off (grrrr… didn’t like the new system at ALL and then I had to put a new strap on with cold hands), was 22:01. Not bad, since I totally panicked. The first leg of the race I was a wreck and I felt like I was in survival mode, by the time I got to the first buoy though I “sorted” myself out, and concentrated on long strokes. By the time I hit the 2nd buoy and headed back I was horribly surprised that I couldn’t SEE at all. The sun was shining right at us. So I just tried to keep with the yellow swim caps… which eventually worked :) I was happy when I got out and realized I was within the middle of the pack for my age group!!!! Can you believe it?!?!?! And, although I was somewhat tired, I wasn’t completely gassed like I usually feel. 36/62 for my age group.

Bike was uneventful, not too much improvement in time from last year. My time this year was 49:27, last year was 50:38 (this includes T1 & T2, actual moving time for 21k was 46 min according to Garmin). I think I really need to work on my bike strategy. The course is 3 loops of 7km, and I don’t think I pushed myself hard enough, and I think I’m always afraid that if I push too hard on the bike I’ll be done for the run. During the last 2/3 of the 3rd loop, I really focused on pulling up and I passed quite a few people :) I think my HR stayed around 147-150, so I could definitely have worked harder….finding a balance on the pacing is hard, so any advice you have there is welcomed :) Because it is a shorter distance, should I just be gunning it the entire time?? I am bigger "thighed" so I really should be doing better at the ride :(

The first part of the run, my calves were pretty annoyed with me…but it didn’t take too long for them to sort out. I felt pretty good but was annoyed that I didn’t have my watch (forgot it on my bike) to monitor my pace or my effort. But my run time was 29:56 this year whereas last year it was 32:07. So some improvement for sure. And when I was finished, I felt much stronger than last year. So I was tired, but it was more like a hard workout than a race, which makes me think I could have pushed more :) My transitions were good, and I had enough energy… so I think I did pretty good there. Now it’s just a matter of knowing how hard to push myself ;) My overall time was 1:41:23 (not what I'd hoped for, but I had to be realistic with the swim).

This pic I'm going in for a "low five" with Eamon ;)

If I could go back, I'd definitely push harder on the bike, and if I'd had my Garmin I would have known I could have gone harder on the run. I wouldn't really change my transitions, was happy to do the dismount where I unstrapped my shoes, and put my feet on the top of the shoes so when I hopped off it was an easy "trot" to the rack.

Of course, I feel like any plan I had for this race will have to be different for Magrath, since it’ll be the Oly distance. *sigh* it's 5 weeks away, but I've got the Ride to Conquer Cancer in just 2 weeks, so I'm thinking after a 200km weekend ride, the 40k of the Olympic distance a few weeks later should feel like a breeze ;)

Photos below, me and Brynn (luv ya baby)
Stacey and I, my training partner in crime ;) She & baby "newt" did great
bottom photo, Lilli & I afterward... we look relieved but happy :)

<img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; The water was a chilly 14.5 Celsius. So some of the kids, mine included, opted to run through the water instead of swimming :) hehehe it was more like an aqua duathlon (water run, bike, run).

As the swim was winding down, one of the volunteers cheered Brynn and told her to run, so she took off super speedy to the transition, was up a hill and through some grassy areas :) Got to T1 where she insisted she needed to wear her biking gloves, which took FOREVER to get on ;) oh well it was pretty cute. So she hopped onto her bike, training wheels and all, and went for 5 rides around the transition area. I have to say it was one of the cutest things I've ever witnessed. There were so many cute little ones just burning around like crazy. During one lap, Brynn decided she needed a drink, but didn't take her bottle off, she just bent over and drank while she rode :)

So fun :)
It was great to cheer on the other kids, everytime we'd cheer they'd go faster and smile!

The run was fun, as I got to go along with her for most of it...she was really hoofing it and got tired out...but she did it and ran the whole thing :)
It was super great that they had Steve King (you can see him in the background of the next photo) doing the announcing, so as she went through the finishers shoot he called out her name :) We were so proud of her, and I'm so glad she enjoyed it. Honestly, I was so wrapped up in the fun and excitement, I didn't bother to look at her time. Will have to check out her splits online later :)

So on the way back after the race she said to her Daddy "Daddy, when I get home I want to start training for next year!".

I'm so glad she got to experience it and I hope she will race again next year... just because it is so fun :)

I'm pretty tired.... and tomorrow's my big day. Gear's all ready to go, kids are in bed. So I think I'll do a bit of foam rolling, and then call it a day!!!

Lots of travel lately and a great Easter!

Well, Easter is over, and the kids are just finishing up their Easter Break. They have enjoyed their time off school and they decided to camp out in our home office, needless to say, it's nice to have a laptop for it's portability. (That's my girl, we were baking cookies. Delicious sugar cookies *gulp* If you can see it in the background, that white on the walls is not flour, it's the prep for the touch up painting that is in progress!)

I am pretty sure my last post was from the road, and it has seemed over the last while I've spent SO much time traveling for work. It didn't really cut much into my training, I thought I did good at planning to fit my work outs in. Tried out 3 different pools in one city!!! It wasn't always easy, and I did forget my HRM for one trip, which was highly annoying to me.

Just this last week, I packed up my suitcase for a day flight just so I could drag along my swim and running gear :) That day was TOO long though.

I have missed some training over the last month or so though, but because I was sick (maybe from too much travel?!?!). It was the head cold that would not end! I found that so frustrating, but in between there I did my first 10 km run and it could be that the extra rest I gained from being sick helped me to not be too tired for the race. I was really stoked with the race though, because it felt great :) Really good. I feel as though my goal for a 1/2 marathon in the fall is realistic.

Sadly, the sport that was hit the most from being ill was swimming. It is the one that requires the most planning for me, and usually very early mornings. But I also feel like I may have had a bit of a breakthrough with my swimming. First, Shawn has us doing some swim specific strength training with elastic paddles on the deck. I'm really concentrating on my pull and putting more strength into it instead of just thinking about my recovery and breathing, and I had my best ever 50 m time. It could have been a fluke, but I'm optimistic, and have been "enjoying" my pool time. I find myself calculating how long it'll take me at the various distances.

I've also been pretty diligent in doing my stretching, foam rolling and tennis ball "therapy". Including a few visits to physio, and a couple massages. Of course it's been a few nights now since I've done any stretching ;( I also want to start working in some leg strength and keeping up with core. Sigh...oh time where will I find you!

Now that the weather is getting better I'm anxious to get out on the road, and in particular I'm hoping to ride my bike to work in the next few weeks, since my first race is 4 weeks from tomorrow! Holy cow... just did the math on that!!!! Now I'm a bit freaked out. I know I should be doing it for the fun of it, but I really really really want to place top 5 in my age group.
Hope I didn't jinx myself now! I think my age group includes some pretty serious athletes, likely using this race as a warm up for their 1/2 Ironman races. Double sigh.

This post has dragged on too long and now I will really try to update again soon, so I'm not so far behind.

Really a whole month?!?!?!

Just happened to notice that it's been over a month since I posted. Shame shame.
Life's been pretty busy (bday parties, kids stuff, visitors etc.), and this month has me travelling a fair bit. I'm actually writing this post from my hotel room :) Which I'm happy to say I got upgraded to a King Delux suite :)

I'm getting pretty good at fitting my workouts into my travel schedule. Oddly, this week the workout I missed (Monday) was when I was at home (made it up yesterday). That was just poor planning... had the best intentions, but when I got to the pool at 4:15 p.m. I discovered that lane swim ended at 3:45. What are you going to do?!?!? So I'm trying out all the pools Red Deer has to offer (yesterday Michener Aquatic, today Rec Centre). My last trip here in February I ended up doing lane swim in a wave pool that was marked off with lanes, and I'm not convinced they were 25 m. The hotel has a nice fitness centre, so I can easily do my runs on the treadmill. But, I have to laugh because the treadmills are pre-programmed to stop after 30 minutes. That just won't work for me ;) Especially my 65 minute run scheduled for tomorrow. Sigh.

I am fighting off a cold, so I plan to try and get a nap in later this afternoon as tomorrow is going to be a very busy day, and then a long drive home.

Training has been pretty good, am really enjoying my cycling. I suppose that's a good thing given my plans for this summer! I've been going to physio (also a triathlete) for my left hip, in hopes it doesn't get too crazy, it's so tight and causes me trouble especially during my long runs. Was "ordered" to do a therapeutic massage.... didn't take too much convincing :) I was seriously bruised after! Also have some exercises and was shown a few other purposes for a tennis ball. GENIOUS!

I feel like I'm on "reporting" overload. I've been logging on beginnertriathlete.com then in my triathlete's training diary, and then in my spreadsheet for Shawn, plus uploading to garminconnect.com so I can see the charts etc.. TOO much... have to figure out something a little less redundant.

Anyway, have to get dressed and head out for my next meeting (45 minute drive away).

Just for fun!

So today's run was bound to be fun. I'd programmed my Garmin to indicate to me the different intervals.... so this is what my workout called for...
10min warm up
4 X (4min pick-up/2min easy)
6 X (30 sec fast/1min easy)
5 min warm down

But I'm also supposed to be recovering my HR down to 120, so some of those "easy" were a bit longer until my HR got there. Here are the HR results...
Looks like a roller coaster ;)

So in total it took 51:19
So of course I was disappointed in the distance, but I have to factor in a fair bit of walking, that would be depicted by the "valleys".

Feeling good overall though, even though we've got an extra swim booked in for next week!
Today is "hump" day, and 1/2 of this week's training is done.

I keep going online to check out blogs for work (how cool is that?!), then I get distracted, and want to do a quick entry into my own :) Keeps my mind fresh!

Ride to Conquer Cancer

I'm in a hurry, but if the title of this post doesn't say enough, this image will.... 200km ride in 2 days (June 26/27)!!

I'll be back later tonight to add more :)

OK, so it took me a bit longer to get "back" to this entry. Friday night I seriously could not keep myself awake. But I logged 9 hours sleep! Got up, did my "long" run and then got on with my day. It was an awesome day. We went quading/sledding/tubing! So much fun. Our neighbour, Kelvin is one of the nicest guys I know, and he'd arranged for most of us on our street to meet up over at the little lake in town so we could go out with the quads. It was a blast and perfect day (I think it was only -6). My butt was a bit cold, but we all had so much fun, not to mention the kids. Lar had a good time driving one of the quads (yup he was driving). It was just an all around good time.

Later in the evening we went out to Earls for dinner and for a date night. We finally saw "Avatar". It was really quite good. And I really enjoyed our night out. It was a great weekend, and today (Sunday I'm just catching up on stuff... including my blog).

This past week was a recovery week of training. At the beginning of the week I was kind of bummed about having to take it easy, but clearly by Friday night I needed it. Found myself getting grumpy during my "run" yesterday, as I couldn't go as fast as last week while keeping my heart rate around 125. Today was a rest day.... but who knows what tomorrow will bring. I don't get my next two weeks of training until tonight :)

Oh yeah... the subject of the post...recently I've been hearing about "The Ride to Conquer Cancer" on the radio and TV. It got me to thinking about how there are so many people that don't have the chance to do the types of things I am able to do (albeit I usually struggle through). My sister in law, Heather is currently battling cancer and it makes me sad as I think of her often. And my Mom is a survivor. So of course when I heard about the race, I wanted to find out more.

There's something about it that excites me, a chance to raise money that will stay in Alberta, to help patients in Alberta. The riding part will be challenging, but I would love to do it for Heather. I was only "playing" with the idea, and was even a bit nervous to bring it up with hubby, since it would require me to be away on our anniversary. The day right after I looked up more details, Tuesday, I found out that the Minister that married us in 1993 had suddenly died of acute leukemia. It was pretty much all I needed to push me forward. I was of course worried how it might interfere with my tri training, so I sent an email to Shawn and wondered what he might say :) He didn't scoff at all, and thought it might actually help with my cycling for the Olympic distance tri I'd be doing about 3 weeks after.

I'll be attending an info session on February 11th, before I officially commit, but as it is now, I'm feeling fairly convicted that I want to do it! Call me crazy, won't be the first time...but I am reminded by a song lyric "I hope you get the chance to live like you were dying". To be clear I'm not a country music fan... but those words mean something to me!

When I look back on my life, I don't think it'll be one of those things I look back at and say, "wish I hadn't done that".

So much to learn. (serious stuff)

I think an important part of being human is learning. Hopefully we learn from our mistakes. Mistakes like, not forgetting to charge your ipod before a long hard workout. Like remembering to double check the am/pm settings on your alarm clock. Like learning to trust your coaches instructions. All things I've recently re-learned the importance of. I've also learned that using the word "learnt" can really annoy dear friends :)

I'd like to think that as we learn lessons we grow, and that we'll do our best to improve. This is turning out to be far more deep than I had intended. So let me explain...recently my training instructions have included intervals and some long runs which require me to bring my heart rate quite low to the point where I have to walk, just to bring it back up again. Of course I wasn't happy and did a fair bit of grumbling because I'm from the school of "work hard for good results....work really really hard". If you aren't almost falling over in a pool of your own sweat.... you must not have worked hard enough. Now I'm not saying that I would always work out at that intensity (if I always had, I'd not be in this predicament right?!?!), but I like to push. I've been known to say/think... just one more km (or 3 or 5 more kms, and so on), just one more set, one really hard circuit. I like the feeling of absolutely draining the tank, when I have that feeling, I know I left it all out there and that I worked out hard. I guess I'm a bit "touched".

I understand the principle of interval training, but until today, I didn't really understand (an expert I'm not) the principle of anaerobic thresholds. This is new learning for sure, and tomorrow I have a follow up appointment to go over, in detail (I hope) my fitness testing results, and get the real meaning behind the numbers. I love numbers, I like to "obsess" about the little details, so I still can't quite wrap my head around how I can get better by being slower in my training. Anyone that knows me, would agree I like the numbers.... they totally motivate me. (Can you imagine the day I discovered I could plot out, online, an animated map of my run/ride from my Garmin??!?!?)

I'm pretty sure it is this type of detail that attracts me to multi-sport. I like the challenge, how far can I push. I want to be good. I want to be good "so bad" that I'll even walk a recovery interval on the treadmill, *sigh* if I must.

I'll also be getting some sport nutritional guidance, hopefully I can focus on reducing my % body fat to improve my VO2max score :)

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jasminn-trihigh.blogspot.com/2010/01/so-much-to-learn-serious-stuff.html' title='So much to learn. I haven't really thought too much about what goals I'd like to have for 2010, other than my racing goals already set out. More of that later.

Christmas was lovely, and I'm finding myself having to "talk" myself out of feeling sad that the holiday is almost over and that I'll be returning to work! It's been great to just relax and take it easy, and do some fun things. Like get the backyard rink finished! Tried it out today, not too bad. A bit bumpy in areas so it could use a few more "floods", but it is SO windy out today. Also did some bowling (I was sore.... crazy!!!).

As for training, I'm happy to report I didn't miss any workouts over the holidays and even managed to get up early on both Christmas Eve and New Years Eve to go to the pool and get back home before I was barely missed. I also was spoiled by "Santa" as I received my new pedals and got my new cycling shoes as well as a fair bit of athletic wear. Will put in a picture later. Also, thanks to erin337 I heard about a online sale at Sugoi, awesome!!! So I'm patiently waiting for my new purchases :) Swim suit, cycling shorts, visor and arm warmers :) All that from the comfort of my home, I love online shopping!!!!
Stacey got all geared up over xmas, new bike (Kona Dew Drop..... very nice indeedy!) a new indoor trainer, a garmin, and a swim lap counter.

There's a 100km trainer ride going on today started by kelownagurl and other folks I've been following on Twitter. I would have liked to join them, had my bike been ready. But, that's a good goal to set for next year. Hope to get my bike fitting in this next week (hope hope hope), my last few rides have been BRUTAL. I've been super uncomfortable, can't quite get the seat angle right, or it could be that my riding shorts are a bit too bulky these days, and I get hurty in parts that should hurt :( Plus using the pedal cages is impossible for doing drills, and also seems like the pressure on my hands is pretty intense, so I'm guessing my handle bars need to be adjusted too! And of course the infamous Garmin bike computer. I love it!!! I really do, if I could just get it to stay in place. The sensor doesn't seem to want to stay put, and the magnet on the pedal shaft doesn't want to stay either :(

Speaking of my bike, couldn't believe it! The other day when I took it in to the shop to get the pedals put on, the helpful fellow filled up my rear tire as it was low ..... BANG!!!!! he wasn't too impressed, as he had to give me a new tube. Then after putting the tire back on he discovered a large rip in my tire (probably half the size of a dime!). That was very surprising. So I needed to get a new tire, but since I'm only going to be using the indoor trainer I purchased a tire that is specific for trainers and won't wear down. It is pretty blue, and now I won't have bits of black rubber everywhere in the basement :) So, in the spring before I head outdoors, I'll need to get another road tire.

I started using my Triathlon training diary, to record my workouts etc., it'll take a bit of getting used to, since I'm so used to just typing things out. Ah, maybe that's a good goal for 2010, to journal my training!

Haven't received my next set of training plans, but they are expected to arrive on Sunday. Tomorrow is a long "SLOW" run, not sure about that. Supposed to keep my HR in the mid 120's!!!!!!!!!!!!! Going to be boring...have to download some podcasts! Why so slow??? So confusing.

OK, better run and get the roast in the oven, thought I'd do up a nice garlic roast for dinner, with mashed potatoes and carrots. YUM.

It was so yummy! The colour of the gravy was gorgeous!!! But I do feel sluggish now.

Twas the morning of race day...

'Twas the morning of race day and all through the year
Muscles had ached, loads of cash spent on gear;
The bikes were racked in transition with care,
In hopes that post swim we’d eventually be there;
Helmets and shoes were nestled all snug in their place,
While we prayed we’d finish this gawd awful race;

With us in our spandex, wetsuits and swim cap,
‘Twas the first open water swim, we must avoid mishap,
When out on the lake there arose such a clatter,
Was too late to worry now, ‘cuz it really didn’t matter.
Down to the beach we marched -- nay we trudged,
Knowing today our efforts would fully be judged.

The sun on the lake, shining off the buoys out far,
Would challenge me for sure, but not you, you’re a swim star!
When, what to our wondering eyes should appear,
But a whole lot of “pros”, with some pretty fancy gear.
With super fast bikes, that would make them ride quick,
Thank goodness we’d planned and done a good brick.

As quick as lactic acid these racers they came,
We were focused and nervous but determined all the same;
"Now, Faster! now, Quicker! no, whining or quittin’!
On, pace! on form! on, spandex tightly fittin’!
To the top of the hill! That's just freakishly cold!!! Spending a lot of time indoors.

Yesterday's swim was pretty good, even though I was swimming solo (Stacey had something going on). In total 1000m. Today is a 50 min ride, which I'll be doing this afternoon. Have the day off, doing some "other" work, but will squeeze the ride in on the trainer a bit later. I had planned to do it this a.m. but when I woke up at 5:45 and saw it was -38 I voted to stay in my warm bed knowing I could do it later. Tomorrow is an easy run, resting up for our testing on Thursday.

Last night was Brynn's ballet performance. I volunteered during the first show and then was able to watch the 2nd. It was super cute and all the girls did an excellent job! The photo is pretty bad quality, but that's our little ballerina on the right, really cute mouse ears :)

Well I better get at it! I'll do an update once my workout is done.

UPDATE:
I'd planned to do my bike ride at 2, and then go get the kids. Of course it didn't happen. So, went to get the kids from school, had a few extra in tow (so cute!!!). After going to the post office and store, I put supper in the oven and then got on my gear and headed down for my ride (in the basement). At first I was kind of dreading it, as it can be so boring on the trainer. But Shawn had us doing all kinds of different combinations so the time actually went pretty quick. I was sweating like crazy, so was happy when my boy came down to check things out, got him to toss me a towel. "Thanks Babe" I got frustrated with the single leg drills.... I really need to get clippless pedals. I have the regular clips, but it's just so clunky and choppy doing the single leg drills. I could really see how much better my cadence was when I focused on pulling up and not just pushing down. When I finished my ride I finished up making supper, and we had a nice family dinner. Meat loaf, potatoes, broccoli and spinach salad. Funny, I had made salmon for myself, but just couldn't resist the meatloaf. It was homemade meatloaf, so at least I knew what was in it.

On Friday I had a meeting with a physiotherapist (for my job) and it was great because I knew he was into triathlons as I've seen him race. So we spent the first 10-15 minutes chatting about triathlons. (He was my physiotherapist for rehabing my shoulder after my surgery in '07.) What got me really excited was that I can book a 1 hour bike session with him, and he'll do the full work up, strength, power blah blah and a proper fit! I am especially excited about the proper fit, especially to see if he'll make any compensation for my shoulder. Although it hasn't really affected me, I can tell it is weaker, and when I'm riding for long periods of time it sometimes aches. He was quite amazed how far I've come with my range of motion in my shoulder, especially since it is such an "old" injury (20 years ago was the original "incident").

Going to go relax and stretch, before heading to bed. I have tomorrow as a work from home day too, but I learned my lesson today and will get my run out of the way first thing :)

First week with a coach

The first week of coaching is almost over!
So far so good :)
Swim workout on Tuesday was ubber hard for me, and as I tired I could feel my form getting progressively worse. I tried not to let it get me down (that was tough), but I am worried about the coached swim tomorrow morning. First I'll have to get up at 5:30 a.m. to make it, plus I worry about how bad I suck! But I know you are supposed to spend more time on your weakest sport, so I'm trying to view it as an opportunity. Was pleasantly surprised by my cycle session, as it was my first on the indoor trainer in months and months (seriously, since a late night catch up session in June!). I haven't had a lot of rides in on my new bike, so I was happy that I felt comfy. However, I am reminded how much I really want to get clipless pedal system ASAP.

Winter has arrived, so I'm accepting my "sentence" of running indoors. I'll try and get a few in on the indoor track, that should provide some interest :) The last few mornings I've really enjoyed listening to podcasts, they make the time fly!!! This week was the AgeGrouper and Milkthecowbaby, and I see that Kelownagurl has put up a new one. Always interesting stuff!!

OK, better get back to work, and oh yeah.... eat some lunch. Tilapia and salad yummy!

Trauma and Insanity

Yes, perhaps a little dramatic for a title, but let me explain.
On Saturday my son complained that his tooth hurt. So I had a quick look and to my horror it looked awful! There was literally a hole in it, so I could only assume a filling had come out. I've had this happen before so I knew it could be painful. First thing this morning we called the dentist to get him in. At 2:15 he went in, at 2:35 I had a call saying he had an infected tooth and they couldn't save the tooth, it would have to be pulled :( Shortly later, Lar called and I could hear Eamon in the background crying for me. He was literally hysterical! Poor kid, it took 4 times the regular dosage of Novocain and he was still in terrible pain. The only way to settle him for the 30 minute drive home was for me to sing him a lullaby that I sang to him when he was a baby.

My day was pretty hectic all around, and for some reason my ipod alarm didn't go off (I think I had turned the volume off.... doh! such a love hate relationship) so I didn't get in my a.m. workout. How about lunchtime? Nope, had to run a noon hour workshop... are you kidding me?!?!?! Sigh.

But on the training note, we met with our coach on Friday morning. How exciting. He's only giving us the 1st week of training, because we go for our fitness testing next week. Then after the "honeymoon" stage we'll be getting our training plans monthly, but will be meeting up for coached swimming sessions. Did I mention he's a fabulous swimmer?!?!?! I believe he was 2nd out of the water for Ironman Canada 2009. Just a bit intimidating. But ego aside, it can't hurt to get some help in the pool. Tomorrow is a swim day, by ourselves and then again Friday morning nice and early at 6:30.

So life with the kids is busy, pre-school snack day tomorrow, Eamon's 8th bday party on Friday (taking the boys to the climbing wall), and ballet recital next week, plus Christmas bake sale to get ready for. I'm also doing a few last minute contract projects (yes yes I do extra work on top of my full time job?!?!?! tsk tsk), and all the other things in life are keeping me on my toes.
Wish I could just train, it'd be hard but simple :)

On the road again....

Tomorrow I head out of town for a few days, should be fun though as I get to travel with a co-worker, that also happens to be my training partner. Coincidence? I think not :) Wondering how much training chat we can squeeze into the first 2 hours of our drive tomorrow! And also plan to get some Christmas shopping in.

For the first time in a long while, I managed to drag my butt out of bed this a.m. for an early morning workout! I know it's important to cross train, so I did my own mini circuit workout with skipping rope, pushups, crunches, lunges, squats etc. I'll pay for it later no doubt. By lunch time I was starving, but otherwise my energy level has been really good! So great to get it done and out of the way! And such a beautiful day today, hard to believe it is late November!

So for the rest of this week . . . should be able to get in a swim tomorrow, as for Wed/Thurs. hard to say, although both hotels have exercise facilities, but maybe a run on Wed. or Thurs.
Friday, meeting with Shawn to start training planning :)
Have I selected my races?!?!?! Yup.
May 2010: Splash Pedal Gasp
June 13, 2010: Wasa Lake Tri [open water]
July 2010: Swam the Dam (Magrath Tri)[open water]
August 2010: Lake Chaparral (Calgary)[open water]

Sept or October, 1/2 marathon, haven't yet selected.

I've also called to schedule the fitness testing, just waiting to hear back. I hope I don't throw up, Lar keeps mentioning how the pro hockey players are just puking their guts out after their V02max testing!!!

Cleaning House

Confession. I paid to have my house cleaned.
How is it that I can take something as wonderful as coming home to a nicely cleaned house (that I didn't have to do), and feel guilty about it??? The inner monologue was something like "I suck, I can't even do my own house cleaning". So, I was feeling a bit like a failure yesterday and to top it off my run was also crap :( I set out for my long run yesterday and had to cut it shorter because my left hamstring is really tight and sore and it just wasn't "working" itself out. GRRR I hate stopping a workout, even if I know I should. But I did find a cheaper alternative to massage therapy .... having my son walk on my sore hamstring :) He thought it was fun, and I thought it felt great :) I'm also full swing into a cold, so my sinuses are waging war. Sigh. Sniffle. Sniffle.

I've confirmed a meeting time with Shawn to set up my training plan (next Friday) and have the go ahead to set up my fitness testing. Hope my attitude is better by then. Reminds me of lyrics to "The Climb" by Miley Cyrus (yeah a teenie bopper song, but great lyrics). "A little voice inside my head, saying, you'll never make it".

One of my assignments before meeting with Shawn is to decide on some goal races. Should be fun :) Will be traveling for work next week, so I'll have a fair bit of time to plan that out and think it through. Oh, and yesterday I was chatting with two people I know that are going to be doing Calgary Ironman 70.3, it was so exciting! I told them I'd be volunteering so I'd watch for them on the course. I think it's awesome how many people are crazy about triathlons.

Well off to drive home, get supper and get the kids off to their activities...have to admit, it'll be great to go home to a nicely cleaned house :)
Feeling better already ;)

The road to hell....

...is paved with good intentions. I thought that would be a fitting title for my blog today. I had planned to get up at 5:50 this a.m. to do a cardio circuit (skipping, pushups etc.). I had my workout clothes all set, my freshly synced iPod, water bottle etc. It's almost funny, because I've joked before that if my kids are going to get sick, it always happens at 4:00 a.m.

No word of a lie, at 3:59 Brynn comes in because she wasn't feeling well (and when I saw the time, I actually laughed). After a short while she went back to bed without incident. I had a hard time going to sleep in the first place (my head wouldn't turn off) I even listened to all of the newest "Milkthecowbaby Triathlon" podcast, and I think by then it was 11:40 p.m. :( Still couldn't sleep! Needless to say, I shut the early alarm off!

I packed my gym bag and plan to do some speed work at the track during lunch. Speaking of that, I just wanted to say how lucky I am. Here at work we have a brilliant athletic facility!!! Huge weight room with lots of cardio equipment, an indoor climbing wall and a 200m indoor track!! Love it. Plus, with a locker and towel service, it's quite convenient. Errr maybe too convenient when the alarm rings so early, although I do prefer to do my workouts in the a.m. as then I have more time, plus it starts the day off great.

Will report back when I'm done .... snack time first.

So I'm back. Great workout, was a bit pressed for time at the end and would have liked to get in more stretching because my left hamstring is bugging me a bit. I did a slow warm up, and it was SO hard, others on the track were trotting quite well, and it took almost all I had in me to not start off running :( Silly competitive nature (s'okay, got to blow past some runners when I was doing my sprints). I did a 5 minute quick walking warm up (sigh), then did a moderate 1km, then I did 200m of super quick sprints (of course a relative term) and then 200m of walk, and I did that 5 times, and then a 1km cool down, followed by some stretching and rolling on a foam roller. I LOVE that thing!!! So hey "Santa" I really really really want one for xmas.
I was thinking I might do a "Dear Santa" blog post, with photos :) hehehe

iPod killer???

I think that's going to be my new nickname. To say the least Lar has already declared "you realize you can't use my ipod, right?". I'm not sure what is up... my iTouch pooched on Wednesday, so I reclaimed my nano that I'd passed on to my son. Today, the screen went blank!?!?!?!? What gives? The only similarities . . . I used it running and was listening to a podcast, now both screens are white?!?!?! At least I can return the iTouch. Sigh.

Went for another long run today, not sure if that was too good with only 2 days in between my last long run! Of course the ipod quit on me with about 2.5 kms still to go, oh well, need to get used to running without it eventually :) I felt pretty good, it was a beautiful day for a run. At first it was lightly snowing but then it just was gorgeous blue skies and hardly any wind. I could feel my left hamstring tightening up :( I'll be sure to stretch it nice and good and will likely take tomorrow as a rest day, since I've done 6 consecutive days this week (Mon., run, Tues. swim, Wed,. long run, Thursday swim, Friday 30 min spin and some stretching).

So here are the details . . .
10.52 kms
1 hour 15 mins including a 5 min warm up walk, and a circle back to house to get headband/ear warmers (my ears were getting cold).
It was a pretty basic run, my usual back road route, but lengthened out some. I loved that I had enough energy to go quicker for the last km, makes me wonder how fast I could do it if I knew how to pace myself correctly *grin*

Good news, I'll be speaking to Shawn via telephone on Monday to set up our first meeting time :) Yay... I don't want that triathlete Training Journal to go to waste.

Lar started his Martial Arts class today :) Yay! I'm pretty sure he really liked it, despite almost passing out and almost throwing up!!! I asked him if he wanted some ibuprofin for his aches and he declined saying he earned the hurt so he was going to "enjoy" it, and then he went for a good soak in the hot tub. Too funny! We'll see if he changes his tune tomorrow!

Also, something cool happened last night. I was re-watching the Ironman Canada and since I was pretty tired I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, but I actually saw Erin337 (from erinleetriathlon.com and Tri n Reality podcast). I wasn't sure so I checked out her race number on her blog, and yep it was her. I found that pretty cool, especially since she looked so happy, when she was racing.

Anyways, I'm off to play with the kids, Brynn is currently snapping the little spring door stopper on my office door, I think that's her hint... not that she's usually subtle about her hints. And Eamon has just recently returned from playing road hockey with the neighbours, so much fun!!! Really what I want to do is crawl up and take a nap, guess that'll have to wait for about 90 minutes (read =>>> bedtime!).

Theme song for the day . ...

There's a bit of irony in my title today. First, because my itouch died last night so I didn't have any music.
But really I was thinking that I should select a theme song for today. It was a strange day, because at work it felt like a Monday (with the holiday yesterday) but I was super high energy, so I kept thinking of zippy and quick songs. Could it be my mind was playing my workout playlist as a tribute to my fallen itouch?!?!? Whatever the reason I felt GREAT today. My legs were tired from my run yesterday but I just felt overall good. Even though I left my beautifully crafted coffee on the counter this morning, even though my water bottle leaked in my bag, even though it was a swim day. Actually I enjoyed my swim today, right after I get over the shock of plunging into the cool water of the university pool.

On my way home I stopped by Costco to return my itouch, but I'd forgotten the ear buds, silly me. But I'm glad that I'll be able to return it. Drove home, without my podcasts *sigh*, quickly made supper (wraps, nice and easy). Now we're just headed out to AWANA with the kids.

I'm not sure if it's the return to "training" that's got me in a good mood, but I'll take it and I'll even get up tomorrow at 5:50 a.m. to do a circuit. Well that's the plan anyway!

So happy pseudo-Monday, but I'm so glad tomorrow is Friday.

Lest we forget

Today is Remembrance Day, and it was a nice break in the middle of the week, and we took full advantage. Slept in (well until 8:25) took the kids to a movie, hit Starbucks and then I went for a nice 10 km run!!!!

On the way back home from the movie (we live about 40 kms outside of the city) I noticed a road I hadn't really paid much attention to, but it was country paved and looked like a good running route. So, even though it was blustery windy out and cool, I headed out on a new route. Yay, the Garmin was all charged up. I walked the first 5 minutes to warm up my knees because I knew my knee was a bit sore. And off I went....remember it was super windy! I started off to the north and then headed east, which kept me from running straight into the wind. At about 5 km I dropped one of my gloves and had to turn around a bit to fetch it, and HOLY crap the wind was brutal. It was pretty clear that the return portion of my run would suck. Luckily I had my cell phone so I decided that I would run until I reached 8 km then would call Lar to come fetch me :) What a guy . . . . he calls me back and says, are you sure you gave me the right directions because I've driven a long way... hehehehe. It was starting to get a dark and so he flashed his lights and I said I could see him. So by the time I'd gotten in the car I was just shy of 10km.

It was a really good run and I was happy to go as far as I did.
Here's what it looked like . .
9.91 km
1:09:17, not too bad since I walked the first 5 minutes.
Average HR 139 (is that too low???), or is that good for a long run.
Max HR 153
785 calories

Exciting thing on Larry's radar . . . he's thinking of joining a martial arts class. I think it'll be great for him :)

As for me, I'm still wanting to complete at least 4 tris this coming summer, and a 1/2 marathon in the Fall. After today's 10 km run, I'm pretty sure I can do the 1/2 marathon with the right training plan.

Think I'll email Shawn tomorrow ;)

From zero to two

From no posts, to two in one day :)
I was super excited to leave work a bit early so I could hit the road and get in a run. It's been a long time, and wow could I tell. I felt pretty good today, just a slight headache and a lot more energy.
It always amazes me how a short hiatus can come back to haunt you. It was super windy and quite a slog, but I made it through and felt good just knowing I'd actually gone out! Started off rough, as the Garmin decided it wasn't going to work (lost all it's battery charge). So I just headed out on my usual 5 km route. I missed having the constant reminder to maintain pace.

Tomorrow is a swim day at noon, and Stacey's not been feeling too well, so I hope she'll join me. I'm not really following a training schedule right now other than trying to get 2 of each (swim, bike, run) per week and maybe a circuit too. I'm hoping to sit down with Shawn soon and set out a training plan :)

Next season's goals . . . .
4 tri's
1/2 marathon (in the Fall)

Off to put my son to bed! Have I completely dropped off the face of the earth?
Nope, but wow I've been busy since my last post, including 3 races :)

Recently I've taken up listening to podcasts during my travel to work (1 hour daily commute) and for work (various trips about)! They're great! I've really taken to "The Age Grouper" and "Erin337" and through this I can definitely see the value in keeping a "log" of how things are going with the training. Plus it's just down right entertaining and inspiring!

Recently, I contacted a local triathlete, an Ironman and owner of a local run shop. I had recently received my "Triathlon Training Diary" by Joe Friel, and am not really certain how to go about setting myself up for next season. He's graciously agreed to help (yipee!!!!!) and has even suggested getting some testing done (such as VO2 max etc.).

As for my training, to be honest it's been a bit "slow". Seems I've been fighting some kind of cold, and my energy level has been pretty low, and I spent most of last week traveling for work (Saskatoon, Calgary and Fort McMurray). That means, during the last 3 weeks I've only fit in 2 swims. I'm going to get in a run today, and I feel motivated and excited to do it!

I'm going to try and "back date" a few posts so I can have a personal record of my 3 races this past season. Will see how that goes!!!

Swam the Dam 09

I swam the dam . . . July 18, 09. The picture to the left is my daughter proudly wearing my "I swam the Dam" tattoo! So cute.

Up until the night before I wasn't certain I would do the race. I'd signed up in the post race rush of the Wasa Lake Tri, but realistically with my work/travel (race was on a Saturday, we returned from our trip on Thursday) schedule I wasn't getting in the training. That was reason number one. Secondly, our good friends from BC were visiting and staying with us, so I felt a bit bad about ditching everyone to go to the race. However, a few things were in my mind. I'd purchased my wetsuit and I felt like I'd be "quitting" on myself if I didn't do it, and what kind of message would that be sending to my kids. I would be doing this race "solo" as Stacey had proclaimed earlier "I'm out, it's golf season". Totally cool, I was glad to have had her join me in the two earlier races.

I had really loved the open water swim of the Wasa

ooop I'll be back to finish

Wasa Lake Tri

This was it, my "A" race for the season. It was amazing! Although my performance wasn't stellar, overall the experience was so great that I know I'm hooked!

The race was on Sunday, June 14th (my brother's bday.... happy birthday bro!).
We traveled out to Wasa Lake the Friday before and were able to stay at a beautiful place within walking distance to transition, we'll have to try and stay there again next year :)
So, Larry, the kids and I headed out in our vehicle, and Stacey in hers.
I told my kids, "listen, Stacey doesn't have kids yet, so you be good, you don't want her to change her mind forever!". We stopped in Fernie to grab some dinner and some food at the grocery store.

The weather was gorgeous and Stacey, the kids and I checked out the transition area as well as the beach. On Saturday we watched the kids race, so cute! Later on Stacey and I headed into Cranbrook for our race pack pickup and the mandatory race meeting. Between pickup and the meeting, Stacey and I had a lovely coffee in the cute town of Cranbrook. After the meeting we headed back to Wasa Lake and took a quick ride on the bike course, just a single loop. Then headed back for a nice spaghetti dinner with salad.

When we were checking out the transition area it was pretty clear this race was the "real deal" and that it was going to be very exciting and fun. Real sponsors, really fancy bikes etc.
Headed to bed about 11 p.m., should have gone earlier, but was a bit excited still!
Set alarm for 6, since we were able to walk to transition.

Got up, had a quick bite and some coffee (oh what a disaster this was, ended up buying a new coffee maker for our hosts!). For breakfast I had a peanut butter "sandwich" with rice cakes and added some raisins. I had planned to also have a gu (chocolate mint, my fave!!!!! only available at xmas time.) right before the swim, and I had some more raisins and pecans while we were waiting around for the start. I also had some gatorade in my bike water bottle and a few packs of gu in my bento bag on the bike (which I planned to take when I was about 3/4 finished the bike).
This picture of me is pretending I was still sleeping :)

I was feeling pretty good, but a healthy nervousness, in particular with the open water swim. We'd done a practice open water swim, which was just "okay" and I was pretty uncertain. But my plan was to stick to the back of the group and draft like crazy :)

So here' s a pic of Stacey and I before the race! It was pretty early, so thanks to Lar for being up to take the picture! She looks so calm :)

We ended up knowing a few other participants that jokingly mocked us as we stretched on our wetsuits, but they called us "triathletes" and that was just cool.

The Sprint group was to head out 15 minutes before the Olympic distance.
So here's a picture of me coming out of the water looking very confused. Have to say though, it wasn't so bad, in fact I have to say that after a few minutes of adjustments, I actually really liked the open water swimming. You can see the Olympic group ready to go. Wait, that means I finished in less than 15 minutes!!! Woot Woot! Oh yeah, found out later the course was 200 m less than was expected. Sigh. Oh well. It was still great.

The bike course was AWESOME and I loved it, mostly flat, one slight hill near the end of the loop (3 loops for the distance). I did have some mechanical issues, as my bike seat loosened up and started to uncomfortably tilt up, way up! :( Good lesson for next time.

Run was pretty good, by then it was starting to warm up, but I kept running the entire distance, even the aid stations. Yippee!
The volunteers were great, some people had sprinklers set up to cool us off and then there were the group of "pirates" with their water guns.
Steve King was the announcer and it was so great to have to run past transition during the latter part of the run, as you could just feel the excitement in the air!!!
With about 200 m to go in the run, I gave it all I had left and sprinted over the line. I was done and it felt GREAT!
The best prize of all, a victory hug from my youngest fan.

So for actual numbers . . . . Even as I sit here looking at the title I know it makes no sense. Of course we all know how important it is to eat. But really?!?!?! It wasn't until this week when I seriously couldn't eat that I realized how LOW energy I was. Not to mention dehydrated.

I will try to not dwell on it, but I'm really trying to get my energy up so I can get back to my training. WAAAAAAA

And, I just got my winter bike trainer on the weekend and haven't been able to use it :(

I'm having my snack now (almonds, thought they'd be pretty bland) and there's only minimal cramping so that's good right?!?!?!

I'm hoping for a mild workout tomorrow, maybe a "gentle" spin. How cute that the event is on Mother's Day :)

Yesterday was bike day!
Found a cool def'n:

velocitize: (vuh.LAWS.i.tyz) v. To cause a person to become used to a fast speed. —velocitization n
So I took my heart rate monitor to make sure I was velocitizing and I started counting rotations so I could see how I was doing. About 80-84 rotations per minute. Not sure if that is good, considering the chart below. Maybe I need to lower the resistance on the spin bike??

You can see a definite up/drop at about 25 minutes, no doubt that was my blood pressure rising as I was SO annoyed that the seat on the spin bike kept moving back, then I hopped off to adjust it!!! argggg I must have looked psycho because I was VERY annoyed, had to do it just after the 10 minute mark too!!! I basically hopped off, sweat spilling from everywhere, reefed on the knob and then with a look of indignation, hopped back on.
It will be good to get out on the road to ride, so I can actually see my speed (from the Gamin).

Very exciting news, I ordered a treadmill :) Hoping the happy delivery arrives before the start of week 12 (prior to race day). This will help with getting in my long runs since it is still winter outside.

My only concern is getting it down to the basement. I finally had what I felt was a productive training session in the pool!!!!
I'm sure it has to be my new found desire to not hate it so much! Swimming is such a technical sport, and in a way that really should be something I like . . . . a challenge! I'm stubborn, so you'd think I'd be enjoying the chance to be neurotic about itsy bitsy details. Trouble is, it's SO technical that it's difficult for me to manage all the thoughts in my head at once!

Well, it was just my luck that I got some really great tips from a retired Professor I know. I suppose it's true, some people really have a gift for teaching, even outside their discipline :) So thanks Ron for the tips! I'm going to try out the new skills during my next swim. One of my major challenges is that my rear end drags through the water! Talk about drag! So Ron evaluated and then gave me some corrections for my kick (or really told me I was doing it completely wrong, and then re-taught me)! He told me to "shake my bootie!". I'm not kidding.
I was surprised how odd it felt, so I'll be needing to work on it a great deal so that it becomes more natural, as "natural" as a land animal can feel in water.

On a side note . . . holy crap, was I cranky this morning! I had 8 hours sleep, so what gives?!?! Is it possible I was dehydrated from my run yesterday (I know I didn't drink enough yesterday)? So at about mid morning, I forced down a few bottles of water, chomped down a protein bar while working, and then I went for a swim. By the time all that was done I was in a great mood. How bizarre, but I'll take it!

TGIF!

Yup, it was a LONG week.
But I had good workouts everyday this week.

Mon: Bike
Tues: circuit + swim
Wed: run at track (walk 200 X jog 200 X run 200)
Thurs: swim
Fri: run on treadmill 30 min

I'm continuing my trial of the Garmin watch with HRM. My hope was that I could see what speed I would have to maintain in order to do 5km in 30 min. Sadly that's going to be 6.0 Wondering how it would be if I weren't having that pain in my lower back/hips?!?!?!?! But it felt good (when it was all done) and I actually felt good this afternoon!!

The weather is supposed to be +14 on Sunday(what???? are you sure, since it is mid-January), and the thought of taking a bike ride crossed my mind when I drove home since the shoulders are all clear. HA!
Not my best swim by a long shot, but I have a new goal.
Goal ==> being more positive about swimming.
No specific plan for achieving that goal, so I'll have to think on it.
*sigh*

Oh yeah, also booked that appointment with the sport physio for next week.

New found "mojo"

So it's been awhile since I posted, seems like life got a little busy on me and as such I lost some focus. OK, I'll be honest, I completely lost focus.
But good news, I've got my "mojo" back and am stoked again.

What made the difference? Not sure, but back in the Fall I signed up for the "Try a Tri" clinic, and the first one was this past weekend. It was AWESOME! And that's saying something because for me the idea of 2 hours in the pool, is generally not something I'd enjoy.

So I had a "light bulb" moment over the weekend, coincidentally hours after my first triathlon clinic. It came after reading the following quote:

Remember that…
What we look like today…
Is based on decisions that we have made in the past.

Likewise,
What we will look like tomorrow…
Is based on decisions that we start making right now.

It is a classic conflict between short-term pleasure and long-term gain. When you see an elite athlete standing before you, you are looking at the result of tens of thousands of little decisions that they have made over many years.

So this is what I figure, the small things do count, and honestly I'm not getting younger. If I want to reach my peak physical condition, it has got to be now! So deciding to eat "clean" is really just deciding to put myself closer to my goal. Seems to be working for now ;) And I'm feeling really good.

I've got a new toy, a Garmin GPS sport watch with a heart rate monitor. Super cool, and allows me to be even more neurotic about the itty bitty details. But seriously, today I checked out my heart rate graph after a run on the track. It looks like a hilly path!!!! The system was, 200 walk, 200 jog, 200 run (6 times). But it's so obvious when I was running and when I was recovering. Reached a max 170 beats/min.

Sadly, still having some niggly in my lower back :( Just may have to go to the sport physio after all.

So the important dates remain MAY 10, followed by June 14th :)

Goals:
swim 14 min
cycle 45 min
run 30 min

How this came to be!

It could be my own unique version of a mid-life crisis, or perhaps a sign that I'm truly losing it, but here I am training for triathlon! And like a true "junky" I couldn't do it alone, nope had to bring someone else along for ride. *sigh*

Back up . . . .
Last January (2008) I was overweight, and by a lot, and not feeling so good about myself. By February I'd committed myself to getting into shape, and not just so I'd look better but so that I was healthy. For the first time, I didn't want to be "skinny" I wanted to be fit. That's good right? As spring approached I was ready to amp it up and joined a bootcamp, which I continued for a total of 8 weeks. It was hard, it meant getting up at 5 a.m., packing a lot of food up and not returning home to my family until about 5 p.m. After the 8 weeks I "coasted" during summer holidays and even joked about how I'd never be crazy enough to do a triathlon again.

That brings us to this Fall, 6 months later and 55 lbs lighter. Where the idea to do a triathlon came from I don't know. I was absolutely thrilled to watch our own Simon Whitfield win the silver medal in Beijing ... maybe that was what did it?? I did a triathlon about 8 years ago, and finished. That was my goal, to finish. Now, I don't just want to finish I actually want to compete.

Somehow while convincing myself to do it, I managed to convince a co-worker to do it with me and then there really was no easy way out! (Luv ya Stacey, and my condolences to Steve for making him a soon to be tri-widower.) I signed up for swimming lessons, because a swimmer I am not! Picked up a road bike (thanks Paul) and got a new swim suit and a pair of runners.

Now, to be honest, I'm Triathlon Obsessed! It's one of the first things I think about in the morning, and certainly something I even dream about. I keep researching equipment, reading all kinds of information I can get my hands on and can't wait to go to the Tri-It store in Calgary.

So if this is a "mid-life" crisis, I'm hanging on for the ride. Just over one year ago I had a major shoulder repair surgery, was overweight and had no energy. Now, I know I annoy the heck out of people with my energy toward Triathloning and this new found "I want to be an athlete in my mid-30's". The lengths I seem to be willing to go in order to do this and do it well is exhausting but somehow I love it!
